Why Belarus Could Be One Of Key Topics For Merz

He will clearly not like Lukashenka’s actions.

Germany voted for a change of government. The early elections to the Bundestag, held on Sunday, February 23, were won by the opposition conservative bloc CDU/CSU, gaining 28.5 percent of the vote.

The head of the party, Friedrich Merz, will become Chancellor of Germany.

During the election campaign, the politician made several statements that will have consequences for Belarus.

Merz promises to close the way to Germany for illegal migrants on his first day as Chancellor, they will be deprived of the opportunity to apply for asylum.

“It is no secret that the overwhelming majority of illegal migrants trying to get to the EU through Belarus want to end up in Germany. The gates to Germany will close in the near future, which means the flow of illegals trying to jump on the “last train” will increase. And here the decision is up to Lukashenka: by curbing illegal migration, he can take a step towards improving relations with the EU; by promoting illegal migration, he will only make himself additional opponents in Europe,” notes political scientist Alexander Friedman.
