French President Emmanuel Macron has rejected recent accusations by US President Donald Trump against Volodymyr Zelensky regarding alleged ‘dictatorship without elections’.
This is reported by BFMTV.
The French leader reminded of the problems with the ‘election’ of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During a live video chat with internet users, Macron supported Zelensky after Trump's harsh statements, who on Wednesday, 19 February, called the Ukrainian president a ‘dictator without elections’ and said that Zelensky was ‘doing a terrible job’ and ‘refusing to hold elections.’
Macron emphasised that his Ukrainian counterpart was a legitimate and ‘elected president of a free system’. Unlike him, the French president added, ‘this cannot be said of Putin.’
‘This is not a case like with Vladimir Putin, who kills his opponents and manipulates his elections for a long time,’ the French leader noted.
Macron also explained that Zelensky ‘cannot hold elections’ because of the martial law in force in Ukraine for almost three years, which interrupts the entire electoral process.
‘Do you think it would be fun for us to hold elections in the same situation?’ Macron asked.
He also expressed the view that the ‘prolonged peace’ is a ‘prerequisite for elections’ in Ukraine.
‘Do you think he (Zelensky) can organise presidential or parliamentary elections in a country where millions of Ukrainians have fled for their safety, where millions of others are mobilised to the front... and where a part of its territory has been seized by Russia?’ the French president added.
Macron emphasised that ‘we want more democracy in Ukraine in the long term through a lasting peace’.
‘President Zelensky also wants democracy because he is the fruit of it,’ he said.
