Important Statement: EU Will Not Lift Sanctions Off Russia If US Does

Brussels is working on the preparation of the 16th package of sanctions against Russia.

The European Union is not going to lift sanctions against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine, even if the US takes this step. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification Valdis Dombrovskis before the meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council on 18 February 2025 in Brussels, the European Commission informs.

The official was asked whether the EU would lift sanctions against Russia if the US did so. He clearly answered that Brussels would pursue its own sanctions policy, which does not depend on the decisions of the Trump administration.

“Considering the policy of the new US administration, the EU must take the issue of its own security into its own hands, this also applies to the sanctions policy. You know that work is currently underway on the 16th package,” Dombrovskis replied.
